The game appeared in 3 regions, Korea, Japan and the US and this document will attempt to covers all versions and their differences. R-Type Final pays homage to every game in the series, including the lesser known R-Type Leo and even Cosmic Cop (Gallop - Armed Police Unit). The game allows you to use over 100 ships including dozens of classic ships (and offshoots) as well as enemy ships and a number of interesting new ones. As a fan of the series you are sure to be pleased by the sheer number of options at your disposal. I have chronicled virtually every aspect of the game with the exception of the ship unlocking requirements. These are specific and quite difficult to figure out. Check out daimaou mike's excellent FAQ here at GameFAQs for that information. Alternately, you can check out my R-Type Final site which has most of the following information laid out neatly. It also lists ship unlocking requirements and images and attributes of each craft. http://www.slateman.net/rtype/rtypefinal/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Revision Notes: -------------- v1.5 Completed Missile & Bit info Slight update to level 3 Boss -Final version? perhaps. v1.4 Missile & Bit info updated (20 ships left) Level 3.5 Boss details expanded Quotes Section completed GameShark & Code Breaker codes v1.3 Level 6.1, 6.2, F.B, F.C info added Complete Wave Cannon and Force Orb listings (tks to Zach Keene) Still filling in ship Missile and Bit details Korean/Japan/US differences in Missile names (+1 bit) Controls listed Quotes section added v1.2 US Invincibility code from daimaou mike Corrected info regarding level 3.5 Boss info for level 3.5 Awards Listing included More Korean/Japanese/US differences Wave Cannon, Force Orb, Missile & Bit info expanded greatly v1.1 Boss Strategies expanded Missile & Bit info detailed v1.0 Document created, clearly work in progress! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ---------------------------------------------------. The Japanese version followed but unfortunately I have not tested this game. The US version came out last. Having not played the Japanese game, I do not necessarily know if these changes are exclusive for the US version or if they also appear in the Japanese game. Free Play In the US version, after less than an hour of gameply, your credits when starting a new game go from 6 to 12 to 14. Eventually Free Play is enabled. The Korean version only had 6 credits even after playing for many hours. I have been told that you can obtain Free Play in this version but upon restarting your Playstation 2, you will revert back to 6 credits Ship Names As detailed below, 5 ships were renamed between the Korean and Japanese versions. The US game retains the Japanese names. Passwords There are 4 password locked ships. The US codes are different from the Korean and Japanese versions. Ending Music The US version has an ending song performed by Blue Man Group whereas the other versions have a different theme. Missiles Some of the Missile names have changed between releases. One Bit as well. Invincibility The code for Invincibility was changed, barely. BOSS STRATEGIES =--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--= Level 1 - Metropolis Quietus ------- The enemy's weak spot appears to the right of the screen. Approach the boss the first time with a fully charged beam. Find a safe spot as the tentacles extend across the screen. When he shoots a beam, hide your ship towards the top or bottom between the tentacles and shoot your force orb so that you can get some shots in while you are hiding away. Or, keep it attached but keep shooting. You can often score some hits even while his beam is shooting. This boss will also drop down clones of your ship from the top. If you have a bit attached to your ship at this point you can block them with that. Otherwise dodge and shoot them as they fall. Just be patient and keep shooting the core as it emerges from the right. Level 2 - Twisted Ecology ------- This hanging pus sac has several elements to it. On either side you'll see an opening where a long twisting arm of sorts protrudes. Towards the lower portion, on each side, a small worm will crawl out (listen for the squishing sound) and the same on the very bottom. In addition, you'll see a blue and red rod. As detailed below (section C), this is to play through the alternate versions of the second level. It does not affect how you beat the boss though. The final piece is a glowing golden orb that will come out on one side or the other. This is where you must attack. From the left side, power up your beam while blocking the bullets released by the arms. If you move to the right side of the sac, you'll want your force orb behind you obviously. If you can, leave your force orb on the upper right hand portion of the screen. You can then attack from both sides. Just make sure you shoot all the guns in the arm when you're on the left hand side, as you have no protection. Alternately, certain ships allow you to hit the orb from the left when it appears on the right. 5parrowhawk' suggests using ship #43 (Albatross) or #69 (Crossing the Rubicon) to achieve this. In addition the Strike Bomber tree of ships may also help (#11-13) Simply shoot a charged beam and you can hit the other side of the boss. This allows you to avoid flying under the sac and attacking from the right. Level 3 - Battleship Raid ------- The last portion of the huge battleship needs to be uncovered first. Start by destroying the layers of the ships hull revealing the innards. Once you've done this, a tube will extend from the left hand side. This will shoot 2 streams of small yellow bullets upward. You can position your ship between the 2 streams for as it goes through 2 waves of bullets. This whole time you should be charging your beam. Once the second wave ends, the tube will retract and another tube with a red center will come from the right shooting red bullets. Shoot your charged beam and absorb all the bullets with the force orb. Quickly put your force orb behind you and block the spraying bullets from the left. Failing to switch the position of your force orb will make you try to dodge these bullets and this can be particularly difficult. Repeat this. If you've got a ship with a powerful wave cannon, you can defeat this boss in as little as 1 shot. Most ships will have to charge twice, but several can take she ship out easily. You'll likely need to charge to a 3rd level such as the Mad Forest III ship, but any ship with 4 levels should do the trick. Level 3.5 - Forest Watchdog --------- This stage is only available by completing level 3.0 using ship #69 (Cross the Rubicon). By completing this stage, you will unlock ship #70 (Echinda) The boss here has 2 parts to it. The first is a central core, much like any R-Type boss. The second is a force orb which is attached to the ship via a red chain. You needen't worry yourself with the chain portion other than avoiding it. Charge your wave cannon and blast the boss to take him out. Shouldn't be too difficult. James Means tells me that this boss is the R-13 Cerebrus starfighter that was captured by the Bydo in R-Type Delta. More small attention to detail by Irem! Level 4 - Deserted Lab ------- This guy should look familiar. The classic boss from the first level of the first game. He is broken up into several pieces. In the first form, watch out for his tail to the left of the screen. He will discharge golden paramecium looking enemies from the lower right hand side. I suggest blocking these w/ your Orb while charging your beam. Just like the Battleship boss, if you've got a ship with a powerful wave cannon, and you charge it fully, you can defeat this segment of the boss with 2 shots. You have successfully destroyed the head of the boss, but now it's tumbling towards you. You can shoot your orb towards the top of the screen when the head starts to fall and if you get it in the right area it can kill all the paramecium. However, sometimes your orb will get stuck. In most cases, put the force orb behind you and move to the bottom forward part of the screen. The creature's head will fall over you. Watch the golden enemies coming from the top right of the screen and from behind you. Move your way through as the head falls behind you and start charging your beam, watching out for remant paramecium. The core of the boss is now revealed. Within a cage is it's weak spot, covered by odd looking enemies. As these separate from the mass, they will fly towards you and bounce off the wall. Be wary as they will head straight for you after bouncing many times. The bulbous round objects are relatively easy to defeat, but the spiked looking enemies take a few more shots. Your target is in the center of this whole mass, so pay more attention to that than the floating enemies. You do not need to defeat all these enemies to beat the boss. Simply focus on the middle when you can and keep firing! Level 5.0 - Dimension 26 --------- This large egg opens up to 3 sections. There are 2 wings which fire reflecting lasersas well as the center of the egg. This opens up revealing the weak spot. As always, charge up your beam to max and let the boss fly over the top of you and then position itself in the middle of the screen. Move to the back and center yourself. As soon as the egg opens, move up and when you can shoot your wave cannon. The boss will move on to one of several tactics, but the concepts are similar. It may activate it's gravity beam which will pull you towards it. This is not an attack but makes it rather difficult to maneuver. These beams can come from the egg core itself or it will trade off between the 2 wings. If it comes from the wings, the boss won't attack and you can just keep shooting the core. However if the gravity beams come from the egg core, it opens up and shoots lasers at you. These can be difficult to evade as you struggle with the pull of the gravity. Be careful, as you pull away you may get out of the gravity beam and your ship will speed up, often crashing you into the wings or beams! The main attack are the reflecting lasers. These shoot out and bounce off the wings. Concentrate and try to manage to position yourself between these. If you can shoot your force orb into the egg as it closes, you can sometimes score many hits when it isn't attacking. This doesn't always work but is worth trying. Level 6 - Floating Graves ------- Another familiar boss, this was from level 2 from R-Type! Position yourself between the coiling snakes while shooting the orbs. You'll need to get past 2 of these snakes before moving on. Instead of the classic solution of shooting the eye on the outside of the boss, you go inside and fight yet another hanging sac. If you want a cheap solution, place your ship in the lower left hand corner under the opening. As the snakes emerge from the openings, you will be safe here, but it will also be difficult to score a hit on the boss. As with the 2nd level boss, if you have a ship that has a large wave cannon blast radius, it makes things easier. The snakes will often come out in a pair. One from the left, then one from the right (or vice versa). Sometimes you can place your force orb so that it attacks while the snakes are coiling around. The boss has a second attack where it spews debris from each of the 4 orifices. Sitting in the corner is your best bet for safety here. Keep hitting the sac in the middle of the level to defeat this boss. Level 6.1 - Beautiful Erasure --------- You are confined to a circle on this level, and this level is only a boss. This slug like creature rotates around the railings on this level. It spits out round boulders which you must focus your attention on. Try to block these at the same time as hitting the boss, but don't worry if you need to forget about the slug. The boss won't kill you, the boulders will. After you defeat the first form, the slug begins to rotate completely around the circle and shoots out green boulders. These are easy to destroy as you keep your focus on the boss. It will then extend a long pink tongue which protects itself from most of your attacks. This won't attack you so just maneuver your force orb around you or let it do the work. The boss shouldn't take too long to kill. You will receive ship #74 (BX-T - Dantalion) for completing this level. Level 6.2 - Anti-Space --------- There are 2 parts to this boss. The first has a green core and the other a pink one. Each have 3 prongs revealed which are their weak spots. Following the scheme of this level, these prongs shoot out lasers that can only be defeated by destroying the polygonal heads. If you can get up close to either of the bosses and shoot you can defeat one of these prongs quickly. This can be dangerous however, as they may emit one of their lasers at any time. The boss itself isn't altogether difficult, avoiding the lasers and getting yourself into position to attack is. You will receive ship #20 (R-9W - Wise Man) for completing this level. Level F.A - The Bydo... --------- Stage 7 is called Stage Final. There are 3 variations of this level (more below). This is the final boss and at first glance you cannot hit it. The enemy has no real attacks but instead has clones of all the enemies in the game swirling around it. Keep your eye on the 2 tornados coming from the top and bottom towards the left of the screen. These will also send off debris, so you will need to keep moving and dodging. The only way to defeat this enemy is to shoot your force orb into the middle of the boss so that it attaches itself to its body. It will actually become merged with the boss. When this happens you will see a bright flash of white. Then, charge your wave cannon and shoot a charged beam. This will create a massive explosion and will actually break your charge meter. Now you must avoid the hordes of force orb clones and charge your meter again. Since it is broken, it will take a VERY long time. Keep dodging until the meter is fully charged again. Remember, this will take a VERY LONG TIME. Shoot your wave cannon and blow the thing up! Level F.B - Summer Night --------- Level Final B is only accessibly by playing level 6.1 which is only available by completing the requirements listed below. The entire level is you against clones of your ships. You will come across most of the main R-Type ships and even have to deal with their force orbs. Of course, these absorb most main shots. The boss of this level is an R-9 ship which has several attacks. He will rotate around you, counter-clockwise, so you can keep switching your force orb, or just attack him from one direction. Keep at it, absorbing his regular shots and dodging those of the wave cannon. Eventually, he will begin smoking and will steal your force orb! You keep your bits and missiles at least. Use your bits to score some hits from above/below. He may separate from his force orb which will probably help if you stay close. Dodge his wave cannons and blow him up. After beating level 6.1, you may be transformed into one of the following: - Bydo ship (B-1D - #84 - Bydo System (Alpha)) - Regular-style ship (B-3B - #90 - Metallic Dawn). The ship you use when starting level 6.1 determines which you will be controlling when you play level F.B. While you go through the stage with one of these ships, neither will appear in your hangar or for use in regular play. Additionally, I got an ending when I used ship #84, but not ship #90. See the Quotes section below for the text. Level F.C - Wherever --------- As with F.A, level Final B is only accessibly by playing level 6.2 which is only available by completing the requirements listed below. There is no boss on this level. Good luck though! It's not an easy stage! Your goal here is to fly through time getting back to the year 2501. You have one ship only and cannot continue. This is the most difficult level in the game. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--= C. LEVEL VARIATIONS =--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--= Levels 2, 3, 6 and 7 have variant versions. To play on these levels you must satisfy the requirements detailed below. Level 2.0 - 2.4 --------------- The boss of this level has a pair of colored rods attached to it. One is red, the other blue. Hit one of these while defeating the boss. The next time you play level 2, the stage will be different. There are 4 variants for a total of 5 versions of this stage. You start out on level 2.2. 2.0 Desert 2.1 Swamp 2.2 Mostly Submerged 2.3 Fully Submerged 2.4 Fully Submerged and Frozen By hitting a blue rod you will move down on this chart (warm to cold) By hitting a red rod, you will move up on this chart (cold to warm) Since the red rod typically starts out on the left side of the boss, most gamers will hit this first. In order to access the blue rod, put the orb behind you and head to the right of the boss as soon as you can. Or, you can just shoot your force orb over there and let it do the work, assuming you've positioned it correctly! This is one of the coolest elements of the game. The difference between 2.0 and 2.4 is major. While the level layout itself remains the same, virtually everything else changes. The boss remains identical regardless of which variation you are playing. Level 3.0, 3.5 -------------- Beat level 3 using Ship # 69 (Crossing the Rubicon - see below) You will then proceed to level 3.5 before moving on to level 4. Instead of an alternate level like the rest, level 3.5 is a complete new level in itself. Level 6.0 - 6.2 --------------- You need to beat the game once before you can attempt this. The first time you play level 5 after beating the game, the boss will have a pair of blue prongs attached to it. You will move on as follows. 6.0 If you do not destroy prong 6.1 If you destroy the prong The second time you play level 5 after beating the game, the boss will have both red and blue prongs attached to it. You proceed as follows. 6.0 If you do not destroy prong 6.1 If you destroy the blue prong 6.2 If you destroy the red prong Stage Final A - C ----------------- The version of level 7 that you play on is directly related to the version of level 6 you just played. F.A Play level 6.0 F.B Play level 6.1 F.C Play level 6.2 Each version of this level is tied in with the story and has a different ending. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--= D. CANNON, FORCE BIT & MISSILE INFO =--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--= Each ship in R-Type Final are unique in design but also in the weapnons that are associated with it. While some of the following are shared between ships, no 2 are identical and this gives the game extra added depth. Bit Types --------- Bits are the orbs that surround your ship to the top and bottom. Each bit has its own characteristics and benefits. For instance, the classic Round Bit shoots out red and blue lasers horizontally whereas the Shadow Bit does not. However the Shadow Bit leaves a trail when you move which gives you added defense and can also do damage to enemies. It will take some time to chronicle precisely what each bit does but here is a listing of all the Bits found in the game. Note that all the bit names are identical across the international versions with the exception of the Psy Bit 2/Psy Bit +. The Homing Missile is the traditional one found in the original R-Type games and is very useful. The Spread Bomb is a missile that drops to the ground and causes an explosion to spread along the ground. While it is useful, it cannot attack enemies in front of you. So, choose wisely! Here is a listing of the Missiles found in the game. As you can see, the names for virtually every Missile were changed when brought over to the US. There are a total of 84 different Wave Cannons found in the game. Most can charge their beam 2 levels but some can charge many more. Ship #13 uses the Giga Wave Cannon and this has 7 levels!
