Gaming In 2016: Snore…

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Games, Lists, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Skyrim, Street Fighter, Uncharted on August 20, 2016 by slateman

ZTDPackagingKeyArt_thumbI love gaming, there’s no question about that. But as August winds down and we enter the final third of 2016, it appears it’s been a rather lackluster year! A quick look back at what has come out and what I’ve played reveals a slow trickle of games truly worth playing.
Checking my PSN Profiles Page I see a short list of new games I’ve played since January. It’s not comprehensive, there have been a number I’ve played but didn’t care for (like many recent PS+ games. Ugh). Also note that I haven’t an XBox One, my 360 is about to die and both the Wii U and 3DS are utterly useless outside of Mario and Zelda games. Let’s see where we stand…

Games Of 2016

  • Ratchet & Clank
  • Resident Evil 0
  • Resident Evil 5
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Street Fighter V
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
  • Zero Time Dilemma

Umm…Seriously? NOT ONE original title? Maybe I’m just a cautious buyer now, but c’mon, that’s pathetic. So, we have three ‘remasters’, one re-envisioning, and three sequels. Now, the sequels are good. ZTD is a solid finale into the fun series, SFV as a package is flawed but the gameplay is spectacular and the production value of UC4 is second to none. It just makes a ‘Game Of The Year’ competition unfun. There are other sequels coming…Gears 4, Rise Of The Tomb Raider, and Final Fantasy XV. There are also more re-re-releases like Rez Infinite and Resident Evil 4 as well as Modern Warfare and Skyrim. However, if that were my top seven of 2016, it’s sad to know I’d already beaten two of them, three if you count R&C.

I have friends curious about Mafia 3 or Battlefield 1 or whatever, but going by what interests me, there’s almost nothing on the horizon. And in my Game Of The Year competition, I list the best game and the best new IP title…I have NOTHING for the latter?

OK, enough of the bitchfest twenty sixteen. Let’s see what I’ve actually beaten this year. See if there’s a theme here. This list omits the aforementioned titles (of which I haven’t yet beaten RE0 and ZTD):

  • God Of War (*)
  • God Of War II (*)
  • God Of War III Remastered (*)
  • Gone Home
  • Lego The Hobbit
  • Lego Marvel Super Heroes
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: HD Edition (*)
  • Metal Gear Solid 4 (*)
  • Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker: HD Edition
  • Ratchet & Clank: Into The Nexus
  • Tales From The Borderlands
  • Tembo The Badass Elephant
  • Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (*)
  • Ys: Memories Of Celceta

Asterisks denote games I’d already beaten already (barring HD upgrades, etc.) Of the 14 titles, I’d already completed 6? Two of those were my GotY for 2008 and 2013!!! The two Lego titles I got platinums in. They’re fun to play with the kids. But they’re the same as every other Lego game. There’s nary an interesting and unique game in the lot that has done something I hadn’t already done or seen before. Well, Gone Home but that almost doesn’t even count.

So…I’m disappointed by 2016 but hey, it’s how things go. I haven’t tried No Man’s Sky yet. Maybe that’ll be great. For giggles, here’s a full list of what’s left in the year as well as a few titles that trickle into 2017.

2016 In Music: What’s Left?

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Lists, Music on July 31, 2016 by slateman

Jumalten AikaI don’t care how predictable this might seem but Moonsorrow’s latest opus is album of the year and nothing in the remaining five months has a chance of dethroning it. There. Done. Well, that’s all good, but surely there’s something good left in the world, isn’t there? There always is, some more promising than others. Why not pause to recap what’s the best so far and then see what’s coming up.

2016’s Best So Far

  • Moonsorrow: Jumalten Aika
  • Amon Amarth: Jomsviking
  • JK Flesh: Rise Above
  • Abbath: Abbath
  • Final: Live Reprocessed | Birmingham 2009
  • October Tide: Winged Waltz

Not sure how good the remaining stuff will be. Will that be my top 6 of the year? WEAK!

2016’s OK…

  • Katatonia: The Fall Of Hearts
  • Borknagar: Winter Thrice
  • Megadeth: Dystopia

There are some bad fucking albums I just couldn’t even muster the energy to list (Anthrax). Some I couldn’t even muster the strength to listen to yet. (Ihsahn)

2016’s To Come!

  • Skeletonwitch: The Apothic Gloom
  • Insomnium: Winter’s Gate
  • Council Estate Electronics: Arktika
  • Alcest: Kodama
  • Opeth: Sorceress
  • Soilwork: Death Resonance
  • Testament: Brotherhood Of The Snake

It’s weird. Skeletonwitch is a four-song EP. I’ve heard two songs already. One is fantastic. One not so much. Hard to get jived for two songs. Insomnium’s last wasn’t great. Same goes for CEE and Alcest as well (they were the friggin’ best). Opeth? Don’t know why I even hope any more. Their first three records are masterpieces. Finally, Soilwork is just a collection. Two new songs, a few Japanese extras and a bunch of stuff I already have. Man…Moonsorrow will have to carry 2016 on its broad shoulders. See what the mighty Testament can conjure up!

SFV Snapshots

Ibuki’s arrival spawned a renewed interest in SFV and the story mode was really quite enjoyable. I took some snaps, figured I’d share with you all. It starts with my silver trophy for 100 wins. Kinda proud of that one. Of course, I have more than 200 losses to go with that!!! The rest are just misc. shots I liked. Enjoy!!!

SFV: A Shadow Falls – Dolls!

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Games, Street Fighter on July 8, 2016 by slateman

We all know that Cammy broke free of Vega’s grasp and he later commissioned a dozen similar fighters from around the world. These were only truly expanded upon in SFZ3 with Juri & Juni, both of Germany. In USFIV, Decapre appeared. However, in the new story mode of SFV, all nine other dolls were represented. While the story has been critiqued by many, I embraced the single-player experience and fully enjoyed the absurdity of the tale and the gravity of the Guile/Nash battle. The appearance of all the dolls, each with unique moves, made me smile. Therefore I tossed up a section highlighting them and comparing their appearances with the small cameo many of them had in SFZ3. It’s the usual unnecessary stuff I put up on my sites. Diamond Skewb Tutorial + Jaws DEATH

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Cubing, Guides, Personal, Video on July 8, 2016 by slateman

A pair of recently-uploaded YouTube videos follow. The first is the long-gestating tutorial for the Diamond Skewb. I tried to make this video twice and both times the puzzle exploded on me. That just let pieces everywhere and no inspiration to fix/record a movie. So, I finally got around to it. This is an update to my Skewb & Skewb Diamond Algorithms post from last year.

The second video is just stupidity. This is from when I went to Universal Studios Hollywood in 2003. Mat and I were on the Jaws exhibit and as he rose from the depths, I got my camera right on in there and then…DEATH. Absurd. Don’t watch this, it’s a waste of your life.

Uncharted 4: Landscapes

I’m not quite done with Uncharted 4 yet, but I’m impressed and enthralled upon reaching each new locale. While I wait for the credits to roll before issuing a verdict (hint: it’ll be good), I figured I’d share some photos. The in-game photo mode is rather amazing and I’ve found myself more than once just gazing on the landscapes and views offered up. Naughty Dog has crafted another masterpiece, even if the gaming tropes still remain. The age-old “I don’t want to beat it yet” adage remains but I fully expect to run through this again, much as I did with the prior 3 titles. For now, here are some gorgeous views from the final entry into Nathan Drake’s adventure.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar

Posted in Artwork, Best / Worst, Blog with tags , on April 26, 2016 by slateman

This is older but I somehow missed it. I knew Battle Chasers was returning, but a new game was announced, Battle Chasers: Nightwar. I want to look forward to this all but as history has taught us, I’ll believe it when I see it. For now, at least, some artwork. Man, I wish I had bought one of those collection books when they came out. Going through my collection, it appears I missed a few issues of BC back in the day. Too bad those books cost a stupid amount of money. :/

God Of War Replay

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Games with tags on April 12, 2016 by slateman

I moved to Maine in December of 2005 and it’s crazy to think that the first GoW was less than a year old at the time. In the decade since, three more console titles came out, a pair of handheld ones and compilations gathered them all in remastered form have shipped.

The remastered version of GoW3 for the PS4 was a mere $20 and I decided to pick it up. Coincidentally, some old class-action type thing offered me the initial game for free on the PS3 just a day later. Here we go again.

I did this once before with Metal Gear Solid. Then later on with Super Mario Bros. and another time with Resident Evil. It seems I’m no stranger to revisiting entire series and I inadvertently stumbled upon a new GoW run. There are worse things in life!

So, I blazed through the PS3 remasters of PS2 games in a short period of time. The first still has the strongest story and while the gameplay tweaks have certainly made the sequels better, they can’t hold a candle to Kratos’ initial journey of anger. As the second game progressed, I marveled at the sheer beauty of the PS2’s swansong. It was remarkably-gorgeous and its scope truly redefined the cinematic nature of games. Both games were superb. And so after hitting up PS2 games on a PS3, I went to a PS3 game on a PS4 (this is silly) and OMFG it’s utterly stunning! I don’t know how they remaster games to look this good but it is outstanding. Kratos’ perpetual sneer has yet to get old, though the game’s tropes remain true to its nature, the formula is not immortal. How many more times can we do this….oh wait, then they made GoW: Ascension.

kratos-angry

Turns out Ascension was a free PS+ title a few months back so halfway through GoW3 I deleted 70Gb from my PS3’s HDD (yes, SEVENTY) to download this guy and I think I’ll hit up the fourth title for completion sakes. I played the first three already, why not round up the thing with an unnecessary prequel? Oh, and I realize I’m skipping out on those handheld titles. I played them briefly, never completed them, but can’t say I have much desire to do so. See if I can muster a fourth game before the impending Norse GoW is announced. BTW, that’s going to fucking rule if they do that. Norse mythology is bad-ass and twisted.

Finally, note that God of War just missed out on my Top 8 Best Gaming Series Ever list. It might have made it to #10 had I managed to learn to count that high.

Star Wars Rebels: Season Two Finale

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Reviews with tags on April 1, 2016 by slateman

swrBarring the highly-enjoyable Episode VII, the season two finale of Star Wars Rebels was the best SW outside of the original trilogy. What I just witnessed was nothing short of a brilliantly-written and outrageously-exciting anthology of what we all love about SW. The ending…and here are indeed SPOILERS…so, is Ahsoka dead? Vader’s messed up. Maul is off doing something. Kanan is blinded and beat down and Ezra…wait. WAT? Ezra is gonna hit up the Dark Side? OMFG that episode was legendary! A friend said it best, “I feel bad for any fan that doesn’t watch this.” I think that sums it up. Missing this would be folly. That episode was the best SW anyone could ask for and it goes toe-to-toe with the greatest the movies have to offer. Wow…

Moonsorrow: Jumalten Aika Has Arrived!!!

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Music, Reviews on March 31, 2016 by slateman

Jumalten AikaIt’s finally here! The latest Moonsorrow opus has landed and EPIC is the first word that comes to mind. The enormous sound is only truly matched by the hefty duration of each of the album’s five offerings. It reminds me of the old days of the first Opeth records. Each song was truly a journey, and this album is no different. And while a few spins leave me placing this firmly below the band’s 2011 masterpiece, Jumalten Aika got me pumped up more and more on each subsequent listen. I’ll avoid the genre tags everyone so often loves to toss about, but it’s got everything I love about music and the lyrics…well, I don’t care about lyrics so there’s that. It may not end up being AOTY, but that’s OK. It’s fucking brilliant and it’s everything I wanted it to be. In fact, I can’t even finish writing this without bobbing my head in folky enthusiasm. I love this band.
