Uncharted: Why Golden Abyss Is Better Than UC3

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Games, Lists, Reviews, Uncharted with tags on May 27, 2012 by slateman

I love me some Uncharted. I’ll go as far as to say it’s the best game this generation. It helps that I prefer 3rd person games. But there’s no disputing the level of care the four UC games have been given. The settings, voice acting, stories and gameplay are all polished and pristine.

When Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception came out in November, I was disappointed. It did a lot right, let’s clear the air there. However, when looking at its single-player experience, it was inferior to UC2. That’s not a surprise, really, as UC2 is the aforementioned best game of this generation. There was something more though…something more disappointing than the fact the game was disappointing. It failed to move forward in a lot of ways. It failed to make me care.

So, as I started to play Golden Abyss, I knew we were looking at a side entry into the series. They’re never as good. And, once again, to be clear, it is less grand in several ways.

The visuals are clearly not as fantastic as the third game. The controls are lacking both a second pair of shoulders and the clicking of L3/R3, that’s 4 buttons lost. This makes reloading more cumbersome and you cannot zoom in through most gun scopes. The touch-screen controls are totally unnecessary and add zero to the game’s value. And there are never as many enemies on screen as on the consoles, though the endless hordes towards the end of UC3 was apparently one of the only picking points to its stellar scores.

Spoilers To Come BTW!
With those basics out in the open, it appears (about 3/4 of the way through the game) Golden Abyss is better in almost every other way. The story in 3 may have been large, but like I mentioned, I didn’t care about Marlowe and Talbot. Cutter was a grunt and Chloe and Elena were barely in the game. I was really disappointed in the cast and settings of UC3. Right from the get-go, I felt passionate about Dante. He was slimy and deceitful from the outset and I disliked him greatly. However, you are tied with him, which makes you hate him more. Chase started out just so-so, but as I progressed, I actually cared about her search for her grandfather. The Chase/Nate chemistry is there too, replete with his trademark charm and tongue-in-cheek comments. Then…Sully!!! I really didn’t know he’d be in the game. His appearance is perfect. There is a ton of dialogue between him and Drake, the camaraderie and history is blatant. There are jokes about ‘that time when…’ and Nate picks on Sully’s age. It’s all just like it should be. It has virtually everything UC3 has.

We’re talking about a handheld game that is, through its story and gameplay just as good if not better than the huge-budget console brother! I am totally digging Golden Abyss. It is flawed but IMO not as flawed as UC3 was. It’s exciting and delivers a great story and explosive moments. Where UC3 gave me the ‘been-there, done-that’ feeling, this feels fresh and exciting. You may disagree with one being better than the other, but it’s hard to deny this is one of the biggest handheld adventures ever. I’d, once again, go as far as to say it’s the best portable game I’ve ever played. And I’m not even done yet! And, I’ve already thought about subsequent playthroughs.

I figured I’d share some more pics. I love the screenshot option and these sure are beauts.

Pan’s Labyrinth Poster = Awesomeness!!!

So Awesome!

Portal 2 on Sunday / Portal on Monday

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Games, Portal on May 1, 2012 by slateman

Portal = BRILLIANT!

I almost beat two games in a series on the same day. Alas, ’twas not to be, but instead I beat Portal 2 (PS3) on Sunday afternoon and Portal (PC) on Monday evening. It was beautiful.

I’ve posted my thoughts about this brilliant series already but I was left in awe at the outset. Virtually every element of the series was beyond my expectations. It’s the first PC game I’ve completed in years. It was fun, challenging and mind-bending all at once. The concept of cooperative missions intrigues me beyond comprehension. I’ll just have to find time in my schedule. It was all just that good. The only thing better would be more! I’m only sorry that it’s over and that it took me so long to get to these works of art. Phenomenal.

Best Soundtracks Ever!

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Music, Reviews on April 5, 2012 by slateman

A movie score can really help solidify a film’s power and overall epicness. I’ll collect movie soundtracks from time to time. These aren’t the bands featured in the movie, of course. I thought I’d share some of my favorite soundtracks and why they’re so phenomenal.

Passion

Passion
I can’t say precisely when I heard this album first, likely my freshman year of college. Peter Gabriel is a very talented musician, that’s simple, but stepping out of his normal role to put this out is an amazing achievement. Sweeping soundscapes from another world (to an American, at least), this soundtrack is an emotional journey. However cheesy that might sound, it is true. Though I saw this movie once an age ago, it is so powerful even without the film to guide it. The title track is amazing, a super example of how deep and compelling this style of music can be.

What Is Best In Life?

Conan The Barbarian
As a young boy, this type of movie is what made me love swords and sorcery. Arnold was the man. This defines my youth to an extent and to this day I love this movie and its accompanying soundtrack. It is powerful but has slower, softer parts as well. From the beginning “In the time when the oceans drank Atlantis…” to the peaceful Orphans Of Doom outro, it’s a marvelous journey of sword and steel. Riddle Of Steel/Riders Of Doom is what it’s all about. Horns, chants, booming drums. Fuck Yeah!!! Then, try if you will, try to listen to The Orgy and not hum that tune all day long. It’s not an emotional record like the other two entries on this list are, but it is the most powerful, just as a movie with Arnold and swords should be. \m/

HoFD

House Of Flying Daggers
For a while, I watched all the big movies coming out of China. There was simply nothing like it in the U.S. and the cultural difference shows in both the cinematography and the storytelling. This film is not my favorite of the bunch; it is more a love story after all. However, of all those films, this movie’s soundtrack is by far the best, and just very well be the best movie soundtrack of all time. I can listen to this at any time, whether I’m looking for an upbeat, strong drive or an emotionally powerful experience. The Lovers Theme is repeated in several forms and each is as amazing as the prior, culminating in the Mei And Jin version…it gives me chills it’s that good. Even the English version grew on me. Farewell No. 2 – Oh, so phenomenal. Listening to it as I write this solidifies my opinion…the best soundtrack ever.

Mini-Review: Borknagar – Urd: I Like!

Posted in Best / Worst, Music, Reviews on April 3, 2012 by slateman

Urd!

I first heard Borknagar back when their debut launched along with Sacramentum in ’96. It was a good time for European metal and while I liked it, I never got into the band. Fast Forward to when Vintersorg joined the band and my interest was rekindled. My love for Vintersorg’s solo material waned once Cosmic Genesis was released (though now I like the record) so I had a fleeting curiosity. I LOVED The Genuine Pulse. I liked other material. For some reason, I looked forward to Urd.

During my first spin, I liked it. The Earthling was a particularly catchy tune, the melodic instrumental that followed a great tune. It was during my second playthrough that it really caught me. The last few tracks were catchy and and memorable. The Winter Eclipse is classic, fast, aggressive, double bass with raspy vocals. Again, this is what made me love European metal music. The middle section is classic Vintersorg, it’s almost unbelievable. While the album has less black metal vocals, I enjoy the mix of Vintersorg’s folk-sounding approach and the traditional Borknagar sound. This album may not be for everyone, as the band has really progressed in its long career. I find it a great album and would recommend it!

Mini-Review: Naglfar – Téras: Ehh…

Posted in Best / Worst, Music, Reviews on April 3, 2012 by slateman

Téras

I first listened to Naglfar in the mid-90s when I heard Enslave The Astral Fortress and later Vittra. Sure, it wasn’t the greatest of albums and the drum beats were rather predictable, but it was pretty friggin’ awesome in 1995. After some changes, I was incredibly satisfied with both Pariah and Harvest. But that was 5 years ago. Téras has been a long time coming and now that it’s here…I’m disappointed.

Téras is a heavy, fast metal record with Wrath’s trademark vocals and on paper, it’s everything I love about music. However, it just doesn’t catch me. The production leaves me a little bothered, with the drums drowning out the guitars on several key points. The songs are not nearly as memorable as the last few records and barring a pair of tracks towards the end, nothing grabs me. I compare this to Kalmah’s For The Revolution. This was the first Kalmah record to not be as good as its predecessor. Ultimately, it’s the weakest in their catalog but it’s still worth a listen, particularly Coward. Unlike that album, I liken Téras to recent albums of Iron Maiden, etc. The album is good enough, but why listen to it when you have better music from the same band?

After the epic awesomeness of the last few albums, I’m disappointed this doesn’t live up. That’s always unfair for bands, particularly after a long hiatus. Sadly, the best thing about this album is that they’re still using the Naglfar logo and never changed that.

Uncharted 3: Six Reasons Why It’s Not NEARLY As Good As UC2

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Games, Lists, Uncharted on March 17, 2012 by slateman

I got Uncharted and beat it in about 8 hours. It was phenomenal. It was precisely what I love about games. So, when I got Uncharted 2, I had high expectations. UC2 stands as one of the best games I’ve ever played.

So, when Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception launched, the anticipation was enormous. It’s hard to follow such a huge game and while the reviews praised UC3 with near-unanimous perfect scores, it wasn’t perfect. In fact, it was inferior to UC2. Why? Well, that’s why I’m writing this now.

SPOILERS!!!

Six Reasons

1) Elena
Elena’s character and interaction with Drake in the first game was charming, fun and light-hearted. I loved her in that game. She was rough, yet chill, the kind of girl you would want to hang out with. When Chloe was introduced in the second game, it gave the Drake/Elena relationship a new angle. It was still fun and exciting, and I wanted to see the two together at the end. The ending was great. It was fitting, silly and endearing. Perfect.

However, with UC3, their story was barely there. Now, I realize the purpose of the story was to flesh out the Sully/Drake companionship. But it lost the spark that made the first two entries so awesome. Sully is cool and all, but he’s no Elena.

UC2: Elena Rocks

I will say this though, if Naughty Dog did more of the same, they would’ve been criticized for that as well. I realize there’s no winning here. Speaking of…

2) Been There, Done That
I love, love, love games and stories that retell a tale. DoDon Pachi: Dai-Ou-Jou is essentially a remake of DoDon Pachi. GTA4 goes back to where GTA3 started it all. Homage to earlier days is fantastic. I just didn’t feel the magic in UC3. The ending sequence, where the floor is falling apart is the same thing as in UC2. It looks good, but it wasn’t as exciting because I already did the very same thing. Every time Nathan fell and hung on by one arm should’ve been WOW! and I just felt it was *Yawn*, I did this before.

That kinda sucks, because this game was exciting and well-crafted. It just didn’t excite me as much. One of the reasons…?

3) The Locales & The Treasures
The first Uncharted had me in lush environments with a deep, rich history. I was exploring areas that Sir Frances Drake visited, hundreds of years earlier! There was a WWII boat here, merging the old with the new, a strange but enchanting mix. There were green, vivid jungles, curious WWII scenes, a glorious background for a phenomenal story. What was grandiose in the first game was trumped by what may be the perfect game. A blend of jungles (once again), frozen Nepal, incredibly-detailed city streets, the monastery, each diverse and awesome. Both games made me feel I was walking into an ancient land occupied by the modern. Therefore, when I found a new treasure, it felt like it belonged there. The Mandala Thogchag actually sat there for years before I encountered it.

UC1: Such Awesome Locales

So, what’s wrong with #3? Well, the locations are diverse and all superbly detailed and well lit. There’s no question about the visuals. I just found the bar, Columbia and London’s subway system to be modern without that ancient feel. When you get to France, it’s cool, but again, loses the real mysticism. The same goes for the ship graveyard. The best stages are in Syria and the whole desert ending, but even they never quite made me feel like the first two games did. The treasures felt oddly located and out of place. Why was there an Ancient Minerva Pendant on the boat? An Ancient Gold and Coral Bracelet in a graveyard of rusting ships? I loved collecting treasures in the first two games. Now, it was a task. It wasn’t natural.

4) The Story & Cast
As with every sequel, more characters are added to keep the story moving. I usually prefer the originals, Shrek being a good example. The first is classic, quaint; this was before they added 25 characters and gave less and less time to each. UC2 was amazing though. Drake and Elena. Sully and Chloe. Perfect. The supporting cast did just enough and while the bad guy cast wasn’t super deep, Lazarevic and Flynn were fitting. I hated Flynn for betraying Nate (The subtitle Among Thieves explained right at the beginning) and was happy to see Lazarevic die at the end.

UC3? Drake’s Deception? Wait, what precisely WAS the deception again? Marlowe and Talbot were both weak characters for whom I felt completely indifferent. The outro fight with Talbot was so anticlimactic. I didn’t care! Cutter was OK. Chloe was barely there. The ending with Elena as OK but it lacked that sincerity of the second game. It all suffered from a lack of depth and passion.

UC3: Marlowe - Snore...

5) The Saving System
I REALLY hoped they’d fix this by now. I’m going to compare to the excellent Resident Evil 5 here. RE5 had one save game that kept track of which stages you’d beaten, treasures you’d collected, which difficulty you played on, how long it took, etc. Here, we’re stuck saving before we start any level, being forced to save when we leave a level (i.e. if you got the last treasure you’d needed), etc. It is all so cumbersome and totally unnecessary in 2011. It may be a small gripe, but as a gamer who wanted to go back to beat it on crushing, to collect the treasures, to relive the game, it was annoying.

6) All The Extras!!!
I understand that these were removed to keep the integrity of trophies and everything in place, but one of the best parts of the Uncharted series was lost. Level flips, no gravity, weapon select, fast/slow motion, these things really add the the replay value of a game. I may not be as die-hard a gamer as I once was; I have much less time to devote than I used to, but even I recognize the loss here. The single-player skins and movies were all awesome in the second game. I was rather disappointed to find out all this was lost.

What To Do In Uncharted 4

Listen, Uncharted 3 was great. It’s biggest downside was that Uncharted 2 was better. However, in order to make UC4 compare to the second game, it must fix a few things. Obviously the saving system must be addressed. In searching for a new, mythical story, I hope they go back to the mix of old and new as detailed above. While many may disagree, I would love for it to be a completely co-op game. Some of my favorite times with parts 2 and 3 were the co-op levels. Mat and I have sunk many hours into those modes and even they are better in 2 than 3.

And of course, extras should be added (but disable trophies). Since we know there will be an UC4, I do hope they can get back to what made 2 so great. I loved 3 but the entire time I felt it was lacking.

Mini-Review: Paranormal Activity 3: I Liked

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Movies, Reviews on March 2, 2012 by slateman

PA3

Kids - Good or Bad?

I’ll never forget watching the first Paranormal Activity. I heard the hype and IMO, it was something new and different. I don’t care what you or anyone else thought of it. It scared the shit out of me and I loved every second of it. My eyes were glued to the TV. I refused to blink. OMG…so scared.

The sequel was good, relying more on jumps than scares IMO but it was enjoyable. There were a few solid scenes in it. I found the third film to be even better; the final half hour was intense and excellent. If you didn’t care for the first, the next two wouldn’t do much for you, but I ate it all up. I watched in the dark, alone, and it was fantastic.

Spoilers BTW

Sadly, the real magic of the first film was never found again. Much like in most sequels, the additional characters and therefore reduction in each’s development, leaves me caring less about them all. Sure, there aren’t many in PA3, but for the most part, a little girl running around at night is simply not very scary.

However as the movie came to a close, there were a number of memorable scenes. The babysitter scene (wow!), the second Bloody Mary scene (AHH!), the holding-up-by-her-hair scene, then the jumpy kitchen scene (holy shit!). At the grandmother’s house, I figured out she was sketchy, but sat at the edge of my seat waiting to see how that final scene played out. WHERE IS EVERYBODY??? Then those people in the garage? CREEPY! The final moments wouldn’t have been my choice for the epic finale, but I loved it all.

What I don’t love is how reviewers slam a movie like this saying it’s no better than the predecessor (which they gave 1/2 star to as well). I don’t watch horror movies at all anymore. (I grew up on them.) When I do watch a thriller/horror, I want to be creeped out, spooked and frightened. PA3 trumped part 2, wasn’t as good as 1, but was better than most, and that’s enough for me!!!

Fear 3 Co-op Campaign Completed: Finally!

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Games on March 1, 2012 by slateman
Fear 3...Ehh.

Fear 3...Ehh.

Mat and I took four sessions to beat this game and it couldn’t have come sooner. The gameplay was decent enough but the problem was the story. What precisely, pray tell? Hmm…well, probably the fact that I have zero clue WTF was going on throughout the entire lot of it. I had zero clue who I was, why I was fighting, who I was fighting, who those blue guys were, who Alma was, why our father did this all to us, what precisely my brother had to do with the whole lot, WTF was that final boss all about, and why I should give a shit about any of it. It was entirely forgettable and much like the end of Dead Island (which I think was superior), I just wanted it to end. So, it’s done…and I can move on with my life. What next GameFly? What next…?

Overall Rating: 5/10 – Only because the gameplay was relatively fun. While I couldn’t have care an iota less, the game could’ve been much worse, I suppose.

In Progress: Best Opening Tracks

Posted in Best / Worst, Music on February 20, 2012 by slateman

I’ve been meaning to write a few articles recently, but I never get around to it. I find inspiration while driving to work in the morning. Today’s article…Best Opening Tracks.

The Gathering

Testament: The Gathering – D.N.R.
From the second this track kicks in, it is perfection. Eric’s opening riff sets the thrashy mood while being modern and heavy. Lombardo’s bass drums have that click sound that became so popular around the time while retaining the deep bass sound the drum should have. The double bass parts and faster snare beats are fitting and tight. And then we get to Chuck’s voice. He very well could be the best vocalist for this style of music. He sings, he yells, he BOOMS. The rest of the album is awesome, but it’s hard to follow a song as spectacular as “D.N.R. not resuscitate meeee!!!”

Lamb Of God - Sacrament

Lamb Of God: Sacrament – Walk With Me In Hell
I liked LoG but I was never a huge fan. When Sacrament came out, I figured I’d check it out. The opening melodic part was surprising. I didn’t expect that I’d like this much. It was catchy, riffy, melodic. I found myself totally digging this song. Chris Adler’s drumming was tight and riffy in its own right. Randy’s vocals ranged from the deep, guttural growls to higher pitched screams and I loved it all. I wanted to turn it up. And even louder. Then the break came, an American-sounding breakdown that I often grow tired of. This time, however, the trade-off riff comes into play leading into Willey’s awesome bluesy solo. It just created the perfect package of everything I love about metal. We’re almost done here, double bass patterns over the opening riff, perfect vocals, it’s just phenomenal. Like with Testament, it’s hard to follow such a song, but every time I toss the record on, I turn this song up…at least twice!

“Take hold of my hand…for you are no longer alone…Walk with me in Hell!!!”

Emperor: Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk

Emperor: Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk – Alsvartr – Ye Entrancemperium
I’ve written of this record elsewhere. There, I spoke about the grandeur of this album, its place in American metal history. However, here we look at the intro and opening track. Sure, this counts as two, but putting them together makes for one hell of an introduction!!! Alsvartr is an interesting intro. It’s calm and orchestral but then changes into a haunting procession as it progresses. Ihsahn’s chant leads into a keyboard segment that is accompanied with thumping drums, all setting the tone for the segue. Ye Entrancemperium. It’s fast. Ihsahn is yelling. And THEN it kicks in! FAST! Trym is a machine, incredible speed and it transitions into a melodic section. “Emperium…Behold my coming!” However, we’re far from done. Some awkward-sounding areas, then even more speed. This album, this song…the perfect blend of the melodic and the fast. We have some clean vocals. “Can I ever comprehend? Will my longing ever end?? NEVER!!!” And then…even faster. It’s ridiculous and gloriously beautiful. Live, this song is even more outrageous. I cannot listen to it without getting so amped. “Drawn towards these lands again. Seeking death and sacred soil. I ride the longing winds of my blackened soul. Eternally.”

I had another one or two…can’t recall this morning and the baby is crying. I guess that’s why I have the “In Progress” tag.
