Ys Celceta: Sea Of Trees

Posted in Blog, DoDon Pachi, Games, Skyrim, Street Fighter with tags PSVita on March 11, 2012 by slatemanThere are worse problems to have, I realize. Here’s what I’m looking at though…
First off, I’ve got DDP:DFK going on…LOVE DDP but that’ll be around for a long time. Then I have Skyrim and I’ll echo my DDP comments for this one. My Vita has started getting some love, but more at home than on the go. Then, I have SFxT from GF, which is something I’d really like to own. This is coupled with a bunch of PSN games I want to finish (Rochard, Bloodrayne: Betrayal, Trine and the first Sly Cooper which was free) and Journey on the PSN too! Oh, and I never finished off Outland on the 360. There are plenty of other PSN ones too, actually. RE4 and Hard Corps: Uprising need my love. And we should not forget the impending release of Borderlands 2 (might be a purchase), Darksiders II, RE6, and the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD reboot. Oh, and for co-op games, I’m looking forward to trying out Binary Domain, Raccoon City and I’m psyched about Aliens: Colonial Marines, but I can wait till Mat gets his stuff sorted out first. It’s going to be a good year, I think…if I can manage to get all these games in!
SFxT: Thoughts
Posted in Games, Reviews, Street Fighter on March 11, 2012 by slatemanI’m quite enjoying the arcade nature of this game. It’s dumbed down, ala the Marvel versus games, and has all the flash of that series as well. However, it’s a bit more true to the SF world and I love it. The cross combos are fun and spectacular to watch, the roster is huge and rather diverse, and there are plenty of modes to tinker with. It’s taken all the good from the SF4 games and carried it over. The downside is that a lot of it looks familiar.
We should point out that Poison is exactly as I envisioned her to be. Over the top and ridiculous. The fact that the game has a story at all is kinda cool, and the rival battles are somewhat meaningful and fun. While I got this from GameFly, I’ll be sad to send it back. But, with all the DLC planned, a GOTY version would be welcome. I’m still waiting on UMVC3 for that very reason. So glad I didn’t take the plunge for the initial release.
Street Figher X Tekken Shipping!
Posted in Blog, Games, Street Fighter on March 6, 2012 by slatemanI started playing Street Fighter way back in the late ’80s with the original SF. I remember the day I first saw SFII. I’ve followed the series ever since, writing FAQs and running SFGalleries among other fanatical things (no cosplay, fortunately). So, today GameFly shipped me SFXT. I’m pretty stoked. Hopefully I’ll be playing it in a few short days! Oh Yeah!!!
Ys: The Ultimate Utopia – Launched (sorta…)
Posted in Blog, Games, Web Design, Ys on March 4, 2012 by slatemanOK, many many years ago I started working on (yet!) another website covering the Ys series of games. It’s something I did in my spare time, much like my previous 100 sites. Sadly though, I never really had time to complete it. There it sat on my hard drive, year after year, with only incremental updates when I felt inspiration. The main reason for holding off on the launch was that I never covered Ys and Ys II, which are the main reasons I know of the series.
However, seeing as how I did put so much effort into what was completed, I feel it’s time to launch the essentially-already-dead project. It might give me some motivation to finish off some sections actually.
Feel free to browse the little I actually did complete by visiting Ys: The Ultimate Utopia in its glorious, incomplete state.
Lydia No!

Fear 3 Co-op Campaign Completed: Finally!
Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Games on March 1, 2012 by slatemanMat and I took four sessions to beat this game and it couldn’t have come sooner. The gameplay was decent enough but the problem was the story. What precisely, pray tell? Hmm…well, probably the fact that I have zero clue WTF was going on throughout the entire lot of it. I had zero clue who I was, why I was fighting, who I was fighting, who those blue guys were, who Alma was, why our father did this all to us, what precisely my brother had to do with the whole lot, WTF was that final boss all about, and why I should give a shit about any of it. It was entirely forgettable and much like the end of Dead Island (which I think was superior), I just wanted it to end. So, it’s done…and I can move on with my life. What next GameFly? What next…?
Overall Rating: 5/10 – Only because the gameplay was relatively fun. While I couldn’t have care an iota less, the game could’ve been much worse, I suppose.
DDP:DFK New High Score (1.27 Billion)
Posted in Blog, DoDon Pachi, Games, High Scores/Accomplishments on February 26, 2012 by slatemanUsing Type-B/Bomb (n00b, I realize), I just racked up 1.27 billion. I made it to the boss of level 4 and see where there are many possibilities for higher scores. My goal is to figure out alternate paths (I know how to do level 1, just never manage to make it fast enough) and to work on really understanding why I lose my chains so often. Some moments I have several seconds of no activity without losing it, others, it happens really quickly. Is it just like the GP meter in DOJ?
TOTALLY digging this game BTW. It looks like the different styles (power/strong) will give me plenty to work on and opportunities to destroy my record. That’s the goal, of course.
Video: DDP:DOJ First Level Chain
Posted in DoDon Pachi, Games, Video on February 25, 2012 by slatemanOK, there’s no audio here, and like I mentioned below, I think I lost the save file for this replay, so this is it. I finally accomplished this in late 2005 after a long time of practice. DoDon Pachi: Dai-Ou-Jou is one of the most strict, brutal games out there, so I consider this an amazing accomplishment and one of my highlights as a gamer. A complete level 1 chain, 809 hits!!! Hit full screen, and check this out. I’ll likely never be able to recreate this again!
DDP:DOJ: Level 1 Chain
DoDon Pachi: Dai-Fukkatsu Get!
Posted in Blog, DoDon Pachi, Games, Guides on February 25, 2012 by slatemanIt arrived. It finally arrived! The near-four-year wait has ended. DDP:DFK! OK, it’s really DoDon Pachi: Resurrection. Whatever. Dai-Fukkatsu! So psyched!
I did a few runs, got somewhat accustomed to the systems. The Arrange modes bewilder me, but those can wait. I think I managed 360 million after a few runs. Chaining is obviously a lot easier than in DOJ.
Did I express my utter euphoric excitement? Well, to put things in perspective, here’s my old DDP:DOJ Log. Yeah, I was pretty into the game. I’m going to have to convert over my Stage 1 Chain video from DOJ. Come to think of it…I’ll probably do that now. I think I lost my save game with that replay, so this is the last remnant of visual evidence that I was at one time, somewhat good at my favorite shooter series!
So, while I wait to really dig my teeth into the game, I’ll make some quick links for when I do have a moment to read.
