Shooters I’m Lacking…

Posted in Blog, DoDon Pachi, Games on August 25, 2013 by slateman

Now isn’t the time of my life to ‘waste’ on expensive videogames. It it were 10 years ago, I would have imported these games by now and this post wouldn’t even exist. However, it’s just not going to happen and I was thinking about how much I’d like to try these out. Of course, saving up cash for a PS4 (which will eventually happen) doesn’t help…

Muchi Muchi Pork & Pink Sweets
mmp
Cave released a budget version of this game and it can now be picked up for under $35. That’s not a bad deal for two full games. Now, I haven’t even touched MMP but people say it’s a fun title with pretty cool visuals. On the other hand, I played the first Ibara game and this ‘sequel’ looks like sheer nonsense. I guess that’s the point…and for $35, this will be part of my collection at some point. Yes, it’s the cheapest, but it’s also the lowest on the priority ladder.

ESP Galuda II
espgaluda2
I loved ESPRa.De. and its sequel ESP Galuda was one of my favorite shooters on the PS2. While there are iOS ports of the game, I want the full title with an actual controller. The only problem lies with the fact that I can’t dedicate the time to really master these games. This game appears to be cheaper, also released as a budget title, but it seems to be out of print, so perhaps tracking down the region-free release will prove troublesome. Should’ve bought it years ago.

DoDonPachi: Saidaioujou
ddp-sdoj
Ah, this is the reason this list even exists. I love me some DDP and the fourth entry into the series DoDonPachi: Dai-Ou-Jou made my favorite games ever list. While I enjoyed DFK, SDOJ is the developer’s swansong and it must be experienced! I’ve written FAQs for both DOJ and DFK and it’s my favorite shooter series. While this one is still expensive, it’s still easy to find. Despite the price, this is a priority. I will get this game…eventually.

Shooters have been among my favorites since the old arcade and Turbo-Grafx 16 days. While I may not have the time to play these as much nowadays, I’m still a huge fan and love Cave games. The rumors of Ketsui coming to the PS3 only adds to the allure. Perhaps one day I’ll be able to keep up more actively on these types of games.

DDP:SDOJ – Crossing Fingers

Posted in Blog, DoDon Pachi, Games on March 17, 2013 by slateman

ddp-sdoj-releaseThe praying for localization (or region-free) for DoDonPachi: SaiDaiOuJou is now in full force as May 30th has been chosen as its release date. What is likely the swan song for Cave’s arcade production will be arriving with HD visuals, arrange modes and the whole lot. I’ll never afford the limited edition never mind the super-limited edition; I’ll be thrilled just to be able to play it at all. 10 years after DaiOuJou became the best shmup of all time, its successor has some big shoes to fill. To be honest, I’ll never be the fan I once was; the time simply doesn’t exist. I’m not entirely sure how bad that is. If one cannot devote the proper time to a game like DOJ/SDOJ (unlike DFK); is it worth it? I’m hoping for a yes. Ultimately I think it’s going to be localized. And I will get it. I’m still waiting on getting ESP Galuda II and MMP/Ibara 2. But this game is the holy grail and I’ll pass on everything to get it. The wait continues!!!

Best Japanese-Only PSN Classics

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, Castlevania, DoDon Pachi, Games, Lists, Ys on February 10, 2013 by slateman

psnBefore my PS3 died (twice) I had two PSN accounts. I would peruse the Japanese store every few weeks, downloading demos and seeing what was new. However, I can’t recall the login and haven’t checked the store in a while. This weekend I signed up for another Japanese account and had a peek at the store’s new layout this morning. There are some great classic games that aren’t available in the U.S. that I’m considering picking up.

PS1 and PC Engine classics cost 600¥, that seems reasonable! As of today, 600¥ translates to just under $6.50 US. Nice! However, I don’t know if it’s possible to use a U.S. credit card on a Japanese account. Over at Play Asia, you can get a 1,000¥ card for $17. That’s…not so reasonable. 1,000¥ wouldn’t do me much good, I’d need 2,000¥ (three classic games w/ 200¥ to spare) but those two PSN cards would cost me $35. Certainly not worth it. I may not dive in and get anything, but I thought I’d talk about what’s good on the Japanese PSN Store that isn’t yet on the U.S. store!

Playstation 2
I’m starting with the PS2 because none are really great. All cost 1,200¥ (~$13) but since the originals are region locked (are these?) even if you owned the titles, you couldn’t play them on the PS3. The games I looked at:

  • Capcom Fighting Jam
  • Capcom Vs SNK 2: Millionaire Fighting 2001
  • Castlevania
  • Neo Contra

Now, Capcom Fighting Evolution was the U.S. title and the game was just plain bad. That was a bad time for Capcom and it was before the company really started listening to fans.

CVS2 is widely regarded as a good title, but since I never liked SNK, I only played it for a short while. And I never chose SNK characters!!!

Castlevania was subtitled Lament Of Innocence here and it’s a title I never beat. The dungeons were so repetitive and devoid of character. Its sequel appeared to remedy some of these things…but I never beat that one either.

Finally, Neo Contra was the second Contra on the PS2 and while it was not anything like Shattered Soldier in layout or difficulty, I had fun playing it! I even wrote a mini FAQ on it. Is that worth $13? Nah…

Playstation 1
The PS1 had an impressive library of games and as the years pass, the games look worse and worse. However, a few titles piqued my interest, and for 600¥ each, they’re manageable downloads. There were two titles I didn’t expect to see, and all games were shooters. Let’s see.

DonPachi & DoDonPachi
I am a big DDP fan (evidence #1 / #2 / #3 / #4 / #5) While these are just the PS1 ports, they’re DDP on an American PS3! I can probably skip DonPachi. However, until DDP3 came out, DoDonPachi was my favorite shmup ever. The game is just incredible and this title trumps part 3 with its metal soundtrack.
Worth a few bucks? Absolutely. I’d pick this up in an instant.

But that’s not all…the Japanese store also has ThunderForce V, the two Ray Crisis titles and Einhander. The latter now fetches a ton of money in its original packaging and I regret selling it all those years back to fund a new PS1. I don’t know why it’s not available on the U.S. store, but I remember it being such a solid title, with different paths, awesome weapons and a pretty cool soundtrack.
And to think, everyone doubted Square could put out a good shooter!!!

PC Engine
My friend Dan got a TurboGrafx-16 way back in 1990ish and we all know nostalgia is a very powerful thing. Of course, I’ve gone back to play a lot of these games since, but without the hardware (and Japanese hardware at that!) there are many games I missed out on. And I much prefer the living room experience over
the PC/emulator one as the former is much more comfortable.

The Japanese store has all three PC Engine Ys titles. Ys Books I & II, Ys III: Wanders From Ys and Ys IV: The Dawn Of Ys. Sadly, none are viable purchase options as my Japanese is weaker than ever. Fortunately, I have Ys Chronicle and Ys: The Oath In Felghana on the PSP (Vita) and those cover I-III and Ys: Memories Of Celceta, the remake of part 4, will be coming to western shores this autumn. While I love Ys, I don’t need these titles.

Shooters were still the rage back in the early 90s and there are a number of good titles available. Blazing Lazers, Super Star Soldier and the Turbo Duo title Gate Of Thunder are all there. For 600¥, that’s pretty good. Again, I’ve already gone back to these titles in recent (~10 yrs now) years.

However, there was one title in particular I searched for. I’d easily drop the yen on this one. Devil Crash! As a kid I’d play the US title, Devil’s Crush and have great memories. Even going back to this a decade ago (thus the FAQ and the site) has a special place in my heart.

I’d go back to this game in an instant. The three levels, numerous little secrets (I still don’t know how to get the red ball), high score chasing…it’s just awesome. It’s one of the things I don’t like about this generation. With online leaderboards all the rage, we lose out on local high scores. I love the top-10 lists. Nowadays, games often just keep your best score which destroys local competition and doesn’t even allow me to chart my progress.

In any event, the tame is awesome and I would love to go back and play through it again. It’s only a couple of bucks. Worth it???

So…all in all…with 2,000¥ I think I’d have to pick up Einhander, DoDonPachi and Devil Crash. These three would be worthy entries into my PS3 collection and none require heavy translation. Alas, none are really necessary, so I may just avoid them all and save a few bucks for the impending release of the PS4. Oh, and that had BETTER have full PSN implementation. The new system won’t be backwards compatible, I’m almost certain, but I’d love to have PSN game purchases available. That would be awfully nice.

DoDonPachi: Sai-Dai-Ou-Jou – Localization?!?!

Posted in Blog, DoDon Pachi, Games on December 29, 2012 by slateman

ddp5-logoI somehow missed this, but last month, SiliconEra announced that Cave announced that they were looking into a simultaneous Japanese/Western release for DoDon Pachi: Sai-Dai-Ou-Jou on the 360! This is spectacular news! Of course, I’ll believe it when I see it, but…WOW…i’m psyched. Obviously I’m a big DDP fan (and here, and 2 FAQs) so this is a big deal. Will be crossing my fingers on this one! :D

DoDonPachi: Maximum

Posted in DoDon Pachi, Games on November 2, 2012 by slateman

After hearing about this last year, I was certainly curious but let’s face it, these mobile/tablet shooters aren’t any good, are they? Well, this is a pretty cool game with some decent replay-value, varying difficulty and some unlockables. The branching levels are really all the same but it gives you the chance to get good at the level at an easy difficulty before stepping up to the higher letters (I’ll never beat 5-E). I’m enjoying it on my iPad 2 and have considered getting DDP:DFK HD (which I have) or ESP Galuda II (which I’ve never played).

It’s kinda cool to be able to play these on-the-go. The visuals are pretty solid and the whole package was great for the $7 price tag I paid. I’ve already started tossing together some ideas for a potential FAQ. The game may be dumbed down but I’m pretty psyched DDP is getting so much exposure. With the rumors of Cave essentially folding, I’ll take whatever DDP I can get! Hoping someone can localize DDP: SDOJ.

UPDATES…..

Posted in Blog, Borderlands, Cubing, DoDon Pachi, Games, Godflesh, Personal, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, The Walking Dead, Yankees on November 2, 2012 by slateman

It’s been a long time and a lot has happened. I’ve had some ups and downs these past few weeks but the good has been rather good. Let’s see…

First off, I’ll be getting a new cube any day now and I’m pretty psyched. It’s a cool one, it’s the curvy copter, and it’s a jumbling puzzle. It should be spectacular.

My Godflesh site turned 17 years old a few weeks ago. That’s insanely old.

Resident Evil 6 and Borderlands 2 – Making progress. Taking forever. Well worth the cashola.

I also picked up Street Fighter X Tekken as well for cheap. I’d played it several months ago and look forward to having it in my library!

The Yankees – I couldn’t even write about this. I still can’t.

The Walking Dead – both the game (episode 4) and show (episode 3) were solid. The game may have been a filler/connector episode and the show an introducer, but both were strong and make me yearn for more. Sadly the game’s sequel must wait quite a while.

Hurricane Sandy – :( So much destruction. :( :(

EPISODE VII!?!?!? I’ll post some thoughts on this soon. It may actually have a chance of being good. Four words – Pirates Of The Caribbean.

DoDonPachi: Maximum came out on the iPad and was on sale so I snatched that up. It’s kinda fun. It’s cool seeing the returning characters/stages/music and it is a pretty good challenge on later levels. I may pick up ESP Galuda II as well.

Enough for now?

DDP:DFK New High Score (Arrange A – 36b)

Posted in Blog, DoDon Pachi, Games, High Scores/Accomplishments on August 2, 2012 by slateman

My PS3 reinstall has been the focus of much of my time lately, but today I wanted to get a few rounds of the good ol’ DFK. Instead of focusing on 1.5, I went forward with arrange mode A (DOJ mode). As DOJ is my favorite ever, it’s a great remix. Today’s score was all due to a great first level. This mode is so fantastic, it’s a new game in its own right. Now that I know the mechanics (oh right, someone wrote a great FAQ on the game!) I can work on score. I had another run afterwards which was bound for greatness…however some distractions (my son jumping all over me didn’t help) made me crash and burn early. I hope to get much more time with the game. We’ll see if I get lucky!

DDP:DFK FAQ Posted

Posted in Blog, DoDon Pachi, Games, Guides with tags on July 14, 2012 by slateman

My first new FAQ in over 2 years, I really wanted to get this to a completed state before I got interrupted and lost my passion. So, while it’s still missing some things (i.e. I have to buy Black Label!) I’m pretty proud of what I’ve done. I look forward to finishing this, but for now, check out 1.0 of my DoDonPachi: Daifukkatsu FAQ! :D

I LOVE DFK! Novice HS (2-5!), FAQ

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, DoDon Pachi, Games, Guides, High Scores/Accomplishments with tags on July 13, 2012 by slateman

Yes, the ONLY benefit of the PS3 dying was my newfound passion for DDP! Only Street Fighter rivals my love for DDP (like what I did there? And, for the record, SF wins). In any event, I played Novice Mode on DFK tonight and got to 2-5! Of course, I’ve never come close to anything like this before…like…not even in the same district. Novice mode, I get it…but I don’t care. It was friggin’ fun! So, here’s my new high score. That’s almost 20 billion and it was so awesome.

OK, over the past few days, my ‘passion’ has been a bit of an obsession. That’s good! All of my gaming FAQs have been born of this passion, as have all of my sites. Of course, I haven’t the time to dedicate to them like I used to, but this is DDP after all. Next up will be SDOJ in another 3-4 years. In any event, as I pack up to go to camp for a few, I figured I’d post the incomplete DDP:DFK FAQ I’ve been writing. It’s a hefty document, really, and while there’s a lot still left to do, in reviewing it, I’ve done a hell of a lot! Remember, it’s not done and there are a lot of holes. But I want it online in some capacity before going away and abandoning my beloved DDP! It’s been a good few days! It may not be healthy, but I love it when this happens. It’s been two years since my last FAQ and I did four in the course of three months then. OK…more soon!!!

DDP:DFK – First CC Ever!

Posted in Best / Worst, Blog, DoDon Pachi, Games, High Scores/Accomplishments on July 11, 2012 by slateman

I have been playing shooters for many years but I am just not that great. However, this morning, I managed to 1cc my first shmup, DoDonPachi: Daifukkatsu!!!  OK, it was on novice mode, but don’t ruin my excitement! I was actually just testing out bee locations/values for an upcoming FAQ and it kinda just…happened. So, yeah, it’s not a real 1cc but I don’t particularly care. I was pretty psyched.

Will be heading out of town soon for a few weeks. I’ll be working on the guide when I can, so I hope to have it by the beginning of the month.  I guess this is the only really good part of my PS3 dying. :)
